National Geographic: International promotion for three Thematic Routes in Lassithi

The Region of Crete is strengthening the tourism promotion of the Regional Unit of Lassithi with two important publications-promotions in distinguished international and Greek travel media: National Geographic and Travel.gr.

The prestigious National Geographic magazine published an extensive article entitled “How to explore Crete, Greece’s biggest island”, dedicating an entire section entitled “Eastern Crete: Iconic ruins and culinary detours” to Lassithi. The travel article includes references to Elounda and Spinalonga, Agios Nikolaos with Voulisma beach and the “pastel blues” of the sea, the area of Kavoussi with its Byzantine churches and stunning frescoes, as well as Ierapetra, the city where “Napoleon once resided”. Special mention is also made of the gastronomy of the region.

The publication is the fruit of the hospitality of the distinguished American editor Anthony Grant from the Region of Crete in collaboration with the Greek National Tourism Organization USA in June of this year, who visited Ierapetra, Makry-Gialos, the Lassithi Plateau and Kavousi.

At the same time, Travel.gr, one of the leading Greek travel sites, published three thematic routes as suggested road trips in the Regional Unit of Lassithi, in Greek and English. Each route, approximately 70 km, is accompanied by rich audiovisual material. The three routes are:

1. Road Trip to the Lasithi Plateau: From Tzermiado to caves and monasteries

2. Route to South Lasithi: From Ierapetra and the Selakanos forest to Myrtos

3. Road Trip to Eastern Crete: Coastal villages, palm groves and Minoan archaeological sites

The material was posted on Travel.gr and is promoted through the website’s social media (TikTok, Instagram), offering inspiration to thousands of Greek and international travelers.

These actions are part of the annual journalistic missions’ program of the Region of Crete with the aim of strengthening the international visibility of the island.

The Deputy Governor of Lasithi, Yiannis Androulakis, stated:

“The presence of Lasithi in National Geographic and on Travel.gr is an important recognition of the uniqueness of our place. Through targeted partnerships, we highlight the natural wealth, history, gastronomy and authentic experiences that every visitor can experience. We are consistently continuing the program of journalistic missions of the Region of Crete, with the aim of continuously strengthening the international image of the island and supporting our local economy”.

The Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism of the Region of Crete, Dr. Kyriakos Kotsoglou, stated: “The fact that we are increasingly sought after by leading publications, both electronic and offline, and that we are hosted in their content is extremely important, but the relationship is two-way with Crete adorning their pages. Especially with National Geographic, there is continuity, while the fact that we are the honored Region at the international exhibition in Munich, highlights the potential of Crete, Everywhere!!”.

The Regional Councillor in charge of Tourism in the Regional Unit of Lassithi, Mr. Michalis Klontzas, pointed out: “It is a great honor for our Lassithi to be among the “pages” of National Geographic, one of the largest organizations that hosts the most valuable images in the world. In the Regional Unit of Lassithi, we are ready at any moment to showcase the endless beauties of our place with our unique gastronomy, culture and hospitality.”
