Peristeres Beach (Rodakino)

This beach is located 47 km southwest of Rethymno, west of Kastelos hill.

It is from here in 1944 and a few months from the final departure of the occupying German forces from Crete that the German general Kreipe was taken off to Egypt. He had been kidnapped by a group of British and Cretan resistance fighters. The bay was also regularly used by Allied submarines and destroyers, bringing in supplies for the Resistance.

The beach is isolated and open to the southerly winds. It has sand, pebbles and some rocks: a spot well suited to fishing and snorkeling. There are several large carob trees, as well as some caves (where nest the pigeons and doves) – both make camping feasible, or you can just chill out! No rooms may be found here, only a taverna.

Continuing east, closer to Plakias, we find the beaches of Polyrizos and Korakas – yet another pair of beautiful beaches for relaxing on.
