Sarakiniko is a long sandy beach in the north of Gavdos: it gets its name from the Saracen pirates who used it as a base.
It is 1.5 km off from the ferry port and accessible by an asphalt road.
This is the beach with most developed infrastructure, compared to the other ones at least. Along its length there are several tavernas and a mini-market for essentials. Also near the beach are a few rooms to rent.
Sarakiniko has shallow and clear waters and a vast stretch of sand that ends in dunes thick with cedar trees at both the eastern and western ends. Here camp every summer many of the visitors.
On the slope at the western end of the beach is the house where Metaxas lived in exile; it now serves as a café-bar!
