The Pyrgioliki (the place that collects water) of Ziro is located approximately 300 meters south-southwest of the homonymous settlement. It is a permanent freshwater lake. Likely, much of the area was a wetland in the past, as indicated by the raised bed, drainage channels, and the existence of a second lake at a very close distance (KRI267). Today, the extent of the wetland is only 3 acres. The dominant vegetation is the buttercups (Ranunculus sp.), while some rushes (Juncus sp.) and planted trees are found around the lake. The presence of the Cretan frog Pelophylax cretensis was recorded in the wetland. The wetland is protected by the Presidential Decree on small island wetlands (Government Gazette 229/AAP/2012) and additionally protected within the framework of the Spatial and Urban Planning Scheme of the Municipality of Lefki (Government Gazette 539/AAP/2009).
