The Coastal & Marine Research Lab (CMRL) of FORTH has long and international experience in research of the coastal environment, developing innovative techniques for monitoring and simulating its processes, and creating digital services (predictive and consultancy) to support those been active there (professionally or for leisure).

 The Lab studies the coastal and marine environment from a dynamic perspective, i.e. coastal hydrodynamics (sea state, waves, currents and other oceanographic parameters), beach erosion and the vulnerability of the coastal zone to climate change, coastal protection and regeneration, the design of coastal infrastructure with a minimal footprint on the coastal environment, the modeling of marine pollution (oil spills, plastics), the study of the effects of climate change on coastal society and its economy and the suggestion of measures and interventions to reduce vulnerability, the design of digital services for tourism stakeholders, the introduction of new tourist products and by exploiting the environmental and cultural stock of a region. In water resources, your research focuses on areas such as surface and groundwater flows, flood risk assessment, salt water intrusion, hydrological modeling and water resources management. 

The activities of the Lab concern important areas of research and development that include new perspectives, emerging areas of research and global technological challenges. In addition to basic and applied research, it deals with the development of large-scale applications that utilize research results. The lab participates in nationally funded Horizon European projects, develops products and provides services at the various levels of self-government, public bodies and private individuals. It supports the interconnection of research and innovation with entrepreneurship through cooperation with private bodies to claim funding.
