Afratias and Kalamaki Beaches

East of both Kokkinos Pyrgos and Katalyki is found Afratia, again basically a continuation of what is next door.

Afratias Beach

Situated east of the airport of Tymbaki, where runs the Geropotamos River, the largest in the region.

At the mouth of the river, close by the beach, an important wetland has formed – a shelter for many rare of types of birds.

The beach itself has small pebbles and – as ever in the area – is exposed to the strong southwesterly winds. No organization is to be found here.

Southeast of Kokkinos Pyrgos and Afratia beach is the settlement of Kalamaki and its beach.

Kalamaki Beach

This large beach of Kalamaki (Reeds) runs down to Kommos: it is a well-developed one with umbrellas, sunbeds and showers, as well as a lifeguard to protect the swimmers. Rent rooms and tavernas exist. The beach has coarse sand and smooth rocks in the sea. Like other beaches in the area, it is frequented by the loggerhead turtles (Kareta kareta) when laying their eggs.

If you go south from Kalamaki, you at once arrive at the next door beach of Kommos.
