Pacheia Ammos
This (Deep Sands, aka Ornios) is a beautiful beach some 300 m long, with sand (as its name suggests) and very clear waters, which deepen suddenly. It is set in the shade of tall cliffs, both steep and massy; and exposed to the strong local winds.
Like many others around here, the beach is visited by the loggerhead turtles (Karetta karetta) when they ready to lay their eggs. To get there, follow the dirt road from Treis Ekklesies. Very near to Pacheia Ammos is the seaside village of Treis Ekklesies, with its wonderful beach.
Treis Ekklesies
The beach lies at the centre of the shore-line of the village, which is called after the three churches in it: the Transfiguration, Aghios Antonios and the Annunciation.
The sheltered beach is surrounded by steep and even sheer cliffs, lying as it does at the mouth of the Aghia Paraskevi Gorge. It has sand and very clear, translucent waters – ideal for underwater exploration. Though it is not developed, close by you can find some rent-rooms and a taverna or two.
If in the area, it is worth a trip to the nearby village of Paranymfi, some 800 m above sea level: as well as an old Byzantine church (Aghios Pavlos again) with wall-paintings, there is an impressive waterfall within the nearby Ambas gorge – all 145 m of it!
Voidomatis
A lovely quiet beach at the mouth of a gorge (Mesosfini), it possesses sand and deep translucent waters. It owes its name to a large cave at the east end of the beach: the Eye of the Ox.
To get there, you must first get from Pyrgos to Treis Ekklesies, passing through Charaka and Paranymfi. Once at Treis Ekklesies, follow the dirt-road, which after 5 km gets you to the beach. Having parked your car, you descend a short way down some rocks to arrive on the beach.
Continuing east in the East Asteroussia, the next beach to the east is Aspri Paralia.
