Ligkres & Akoumia Beaches

Here are the strands of Ligkres and Akoumia. Leaving behind the beaches of Keramiana Gialia and entering those of Akoumiani Gialia – proceeding from west to east, the first one comes across is that of Ligkres.

Ligkres Beach

Large, with sand, deep clear water and rocks of interesting shapes. It is nonetheless open to the strong southerly winds. It is not organized, though there are a few tavernas and rent-rooms at its western end. To the east, however, the land projects out into the sea in many places, forming a rugged yet beautiful landscape. A waterfall at the west end tumbles all the year round onto the strand: a rare sight in Crete!

To get here, turn left after the village of Kerame and follow the road that leads to Agalianos, and thence to Ligkres itself.

If you come here, it is worth going along to the beach of Triopetra, taking the dirt-path that runs parallel to the shoreline.

Going on from Ligkres to the east, we reach the beach of Akoumia.

Akoumia Beach

This, between Ligkres and Triopetra, is a quiet spot with sand and pebbles – perfect for spearfishing and general exploring. It is, however, open to the strong southerly winds. Though quiet, it is reasonably organized – umbrellas, sunbeds and some small tavernas close to the beach. It is more popular with the locals than visitors.

Very close to Akoumia is a huge sandy expanse, which has a feel of something more at home in Africa! This is the popular beach of Triopetra.
