To the east of Tsoutsouras you will find the beaches of Pourgonero and Dermatos.
Pourgonero
This is basically two quiet bays at the eastern end of the Tsoutsouras area, each with deep blue waters, sand, rocks in the sea and on shore alike. Thus, the beach is not organized, but all you need (rent-rooms, hotels, tavernas and so on) can be obtained nearby at Tsoutsouras.
Here grow the sea-lilies in the sand, Behind some lofty sand-dunes, the loggerhead turtles (Karetta karetta) venture in the summer for the purpose of laying their eggs – as they do on so many of these southern strands. A kilometer to the east, you will meet the beautiful beach of Dermatos.
Dermatos
Here runs the river Anapodaris, the largest river in the Heraklion Prefecture, which has made a small but important ecological habitat. This tranquil but large beach has sand, small pebbles and very blue water, and you can enjoy the shade of the tamarisks which grow on the edge of the edge of the beach.
Dermatos is an ideal choice for those after a bit of peace and quiet – and also for unsupervised camping, and nudism. Going along to the east, towards Keratokampos, the next beach you meet is Larinaki.
