Vromolimni of Gergeri (the Tomb of Digenis)

The Vromolimni of Gergeri (the Tomb of Digenis) is located approximately 1.5 kilometers east-northeast of Gergeri, in the Municipality of Gortyna. It is an artificial lake, likely created from the extraction of inert materials in earlier times. Another possible formation cause is ground subsidence. Freshwater enters from precipitation, and it also receives overflow water from the Gergeri Reservoir (KRI130) situated in the same area.

The presence of water is seasonal, and during the summer months, the lake dries up, resulting in almost no wetland vegetation. The slope of the lake is quite steep, except at two points (north and south) where the incline decreases. Within the framework of the LIFE program by the Natural History Museum of Crete (00/GR/00685), the area has undergone redevelopment with tree plantings, kiosks, and an information center. Additionally, there is a wooden fence and informational signs around the reservoir.
