The Waxworks Museum is located at the foot of Mount Psiloritis. It was founded on the initiative of the sculptor Dionisios Potamianos, who dedicated many years of work so that the 104 wax effigies were completed.
The Potamianos Waxworks Museum focuses on the leading personalities and thehighlights of the history of Crete. The effigies displayed represent distinguished Cretans, such as Eleftherios Venizelos, Vitsentzos Kornaros, Domenicos Theotokopoulos and Nikos Kazantzakis, in natural size, as well as important historical events, such as the military achievements of Nikephoros Phokas and the liberation of Crete from the Saracens, the Venetian occupation and the Cretan Revolution.
Meeting the 80-year-old sculptor Dionisis Potamianos in the museum, teaching painting or sculpture to primary school students, is a unique experience.
