Survey of Visitors, Businesses & Institutions of the Region of Crete, to create a background of environmental data

In the context of the sustainable development of the tourism sector, JolinOut -among others- aims to provide enriched information to visitors, operators, businesses and tour operators/organizers in Crete and Greece, through a digital platform of high spatial analysis, with climate and environmental indicators necessary for making appropriate decisions.

For this purpose, an environmental data background is being implemented, which can be used in the digital platform of the Rural Tourism Network e-paithros. These data will cover all environmental conditions, with a view to improving the response time of operators, businesses and visitors in cases of extreme events, ensuring the greatest protection and lowest costs from dangerous phenomena, i.e:

  • High resolution weather forecasts and extreme weather alerts.
  • Marine environmental indicators, e.g. sea surface temperature, wave conditions, sea biogeochemical status (chlorophyll, phytoplankton, pH), salinity and turbidity, surface current speed and direction, sea level changes.
  • Seasonal climate forecasts, with a 6-month forecast horizon, and their correlation with tourist visitation data for the seasonal planning of the financial flows of alternative tourism operators.
  • Real-time fire warning and monitoring.
  • Monitoring the vitality of natural vegetation to help visitors plan their excursions to nearby areas.
  • Monitor and forecast their air quality.

For this reason, research was carried out in order to collect findings, data and information, capable of documenting and contributing so that the Envi4Greece application/platform and the e-paithros platform become innovative tools and instruments in the field of rural tourism, which will be exploited by the sponsoring body ETAM S.A., by the project partners as well as by the members of the e-paithros partnership and by rural tourism operators in general.
