Rethimno

From Arkadi (1), we follow the asphalt road; having passed by a rain water tank on our right-hand side, we reach the ridge of a hill where a small plateau can be seen to our right, from which a path (2) with a north-easterly direction begins.

The old, indistinct path descends gently on a scrub-covered hill. After approximately 1.200 m, it leads to a hollow of the northern side of the hill, where the ruins of a small monastery (3) can be seen, among oaks.

From Agia Fotini (1), the rough path goes down a steep slope to a plane forested ravine, which we follow northwards until the entrance to the gorge, where it joins the main stream of Potami (2). We walk along the stream bed going towards the entrance to the gorge, formed by the peaks Kefales and Gaspari. Once there, we cross the stream with the plane trees and the oleanders and begin to climb eastwards on aslope covered by low bushes.

From Armeni (1), we follow the road northwards, until the branch which leads to the Late Minoan cemetery. We take the right-hand branch in a north- easterly direction (2) for approximately 800 m, ignoring any side roads. We then come to a right-hand diagonal branch (3) forming an uphill dirt road, on the south of a low hill.

We follow it for about 500 m of straight walk and then the road turns northwards; a few metres further on, we see a path hard to discern (4) on our right side, which we follow.

We pass through Ano Varsamonero (1) and follow a southerly direction for 500 m, until the village of Monopari (2). From the village square, we follow a dirt road in an easterly direction for approximately 600 m, and then take the northern branch of the road, ignoring any secondary ones. After about 900 m of walking, we come to a group of houses (3).

This section of the route passes through a landscape with picturesque views; to Psiloritis towards the east, and to Lefka Ori towards the west.

After 400 m we reach an asphalt road (4).

At the southern exit (1) of Agios Konstantinos, on the eastern side of the asphalt road, a downhill dirt road begins, which after passing along the northern slope of a smooth hill, follows the western bank of a ravine.

Approximately 700 m after Agios Konstantinos, at a spot where a brick building can be seen on our right, we cross the ravine (2) and immediately after come to a crossroads; we take the left (northern) branch and after about 250 m, we reach a small bridge over a ravine with plane trees.

Right behind the Mountain Shelter of E.O.S. Rethymnou, one can see the characteristic oak tree named Toumbotos Prinos, on the left side of which begins a path (1) that goes up to the mountain top.

After the Iroon square in Gerakari (1), we continue for 450 m to the northern exit of the village. We then turn right on the dirt road (2), which we leave after 150 m and descend to a vague path that goes along a small ravine (3) and then ascends to the village of Elenes (4).

We follow the road from Agouseliana to Paleoloutra and turn at the first branch (1) of the asphalt road, in a south-easterly direction.

The route now passes through the big olive grove of the plain of Agios Vasilios.

From Alones (1), we descend to the ravine and walk along it.

After about 2 km, we step onto the eastern bank, on a rather uphill dirt road (2), that 600 m further along leads us to the small agricultural settlement of Velonado (3). There, we reach the main road, which we follow northwards.

After 550 m, we come to a small ravine and a bridge (4), on which an E4 sign can be seen.

We ignore this sign; it directs to the section of the path that leads to the village of Moundros

At the entrance (1) of the village Kato Rodakino, 150 m from the stone bridge, an uphill road with a northerly direction begins, which bypasses the settlement. After 550 m, we follow a left uphill turn.

After 150 m, we take a right turn, continue straight, and in the next 350 m we come to a chapel (2).

We continue for another 300 m and then reach a main dirt road (3), which we take northwards; we follow it along the uphill ridge which ends at the foot of the peak of Krioneritis.
