Patsos gorge

The spectacular, verdant gorge of Patsos is located in the inland area of the Prefecture of Rethymnon, at the north-west part of the Municipality of Amari.

After the Iroon square in Gerakari (1), we continue for 450 m to the northern exit of the village. We then turn right on the dirt road (2), which we leave after 150 m and descend to a vague path that goes along a small ravine (3) and then ascends to the village of Elenes (4).

Following the main road from Spili (1) to Agia Galini, after 2 km we see a small church to our left, as well as a drinking fountain; 200 m after the fountain, we come to a dirt road (2) on our left side, which we follow for approximately 80 m and then we turn right. After 700 m, having passed through a clump of trees, we encounter a small chapel (3) on our right.

We continue on the dirt road for about 1,5 km and then come to an asphalt road (4), which we follow to our right for approximately 500 m, until the village of Kissos (5).

From Alones (1), we descend to the ravine and walk along it.

After about 2 km, we step onto the eastern bank, on a rather uphill dirt road (2), that 600 m further along leads us to the small agricultural settlement of Velonado (3). There, we reach the main road, which we follow northwards.

After 550 m, we come to a small ravine and a bridge (4), on which an E4 sign can be seen.

We ignore this sign; it directs to the section of the path that leads to the village of Moundros

From Fourfouras (1), we follow the asphalt road for about 150 m, in a southerly direction.

In the beginning of an uphill dirt road (2) to our left, an information sign of the Mountaineering Club of Rethymnon (E.O.S) briefly informs us about the route towards the mountain shelter.

To descend to Nίda from the summit of Timios Stavros (1), we follow the mountain line until the saddle (2) with Agathias.

Once there, we reach (on our right-hand side, towards the south) the footpath which leads down to the shelter of the Mountaineering Club of Rethymnon.

We continue straight on, eastwards, on a slightly uphill path, and reach the northern slope of Agathias (3).

When covered with snow and frost, this section of the route may become very dangerous.

From the centre of Argiroupoli (1), we follow the main road eastwards until a point between the courtyard of the High School and a small church (2), where there is an old path which goes down through an olive grove. After approximately 150 m, the path crosses the asphalt road and continues to descend parallel to a water course.

In this section of the path, traces of ancient hewn tombs are frequently seen.

From the square at the northern exit of Moundros (1), we follow the road in a rather south-easterly direction and after 150 m we pass by a chapel.

We continue uphill on a distinct path for another 400 m and then we come to a dirt road (2) which we follow southwards, into a small, bare valley, where a stream and the ruins of an old watermill can be seen.

Rethymno-Arkadi-Amari

This route is specially designed for nature and history enthusiasts. It connects important archaeological sites, historical and ecclesiastical monuments and traditional settlements, and it passes through a verdant landscape where one can also organize various hikes.

Following the old national road from Rethymno (1) in an easterly direction, we reach Adele. We then pass through a beautiful agricultural area where the scenery is dominated by traditional olive groves, interspersed with several small valleys with groups of cypresses.
